Ann-Marie Keating

My name is Ann-Marie Keating, I was born in Cairns in 1975 and I am a descendant of the Ko-Ko Muluridji tribe which is situated North West of Cairns. My tribal lands stretch from Kuranda to Mt Carbine. My passion for painting initiated from watching my Aunt Jennifer Green (Mundabaree) create traditional and contemporary art work. Through my artwork I am able to practice and share my cultural heritage with my family and the public.

I first started painting in the 1990’s selling small artworks to Tourist shops in Kuranda and in time opened a retail shop and sold and wholesaled art and artifacts and a range of prints to outlets in Darwin,Cairns, Kuranda and Port Douglas. After my family had grown in number I then opened a market stall on the Cairns Esplanade selling various art from painted shells to large canvas paintings and didgeridoos. Now I paint casually with requests for artworks from past clients and attend to my family. I greatly enjoy sharing my art and expressing my love of culture and nature in my Tribal lands and hope to continue painting and pass this gift to my children.

I got the artistic gene!

Why I say that is because I’ve helped mum with murals before… and let’s just say mum had to fix everything I touched.

I first began painting and burning flowers on hats until I eventually got bored and tried painting a kookaburra. It was a success! I’m pretty sure mum was impressed with my newfound talent or shocked either way it kicked off my journey as an artist.

I’m currently polishing off a degree in science-law and painting hats is my part time job to support my studies. The bonus is that I get to annoy work with my mum and learn from her at the same time.

Yes, I’ve spilled a paint tray or two and yes, I’ve ruined a few paintings mum’s let me finish off but it’s all part of the experience.
